According to a recent quote by marketing guru Seth Godin, “if you’re an average worker, you’re going straight to the bottom.” The recession and resulting changes in the job market over the past 2+ years have caused employers to expect more from their employees than ever before. Organizations are lean, mean, fighting machines with low tolerance for anything less than a “B” performance. In past decades, organizations who actually terminated the bottom tier of their employee base due to poor performance were legendary – and few and far between. This practice is much more prevalent and acceptable by today’s standards.
How do you stay on top of your personal game and make sure you head towards the top in the world of the new average worker?
- Understand what the organization and your leader expect of you. Clarify goals, outcomes, and measures of success. Do not assume you and your leader are on the same page without confirming!
- Be honest with yourself about limitations and weaknesses that may make it difficult to achieve your goals. Take the necessary steps to get the support you need, whether it is in the form of resources, training, coaching, or mentoring.
- Raise the flag early on if you are struggling. This is not a sign of weakness. Better to own up to your challenges right away so you can face them head on or renegotiate a goal before it is too late.
- Enlist the support of peers and offer support to your coworkers, as opposed to creating a competitive atmosphere. A “we’re in this together” mentality will help you all succeed.
- If you lead others, make sure they are clear about expectations and the resources/support available to them to achieve results. You are accountable for the success of your people as well.
